Spring calving in Gippsland puts pressure on everything at once. Cows coming back into full lactation, batch counts climbing, and a feed system that was just managing over winter suddenly needs to do a third more work by October. That is when the question comes up: do you buy a second mixer, or do you put a delivery wagon behind the one you have?
They are not the same solution. Getting that wrong costs you either money you did not need to spend or time you cannot get back at the busiest point of the year.
What a Second Mixer Actually Does
A second tub adds processing capacity. If your current machine is genuinely the bottleneck, if it is running flat out and still not keeping up with batch demand, then another mixer is the right answer. You can run two recipes simultaneously, split your herd groups more finely, or free one machine to do a long-run paddock while the other stays near the dairy.
But processing capacity and distribution capacity are different things. A lot of operations that think they need a second tub are actually losing time not at the mixing stage but in transit. The mixer is sitting idle while someone drives a full load three kilometres out to a break-fence mob, then drives back empty. Do that twice a day and you have burned an hour of tractor time and auger availability on nothing but distance.
If the bottleneck is distance rather than batch count, a delivery wagon solves it cheaper and simpler.

Delivery Wagons and What They Are Built For
A purpose-built delivery wagon receives already-mixed TMR from a stationary mixer and moves it to the bunk. That is its whole job, and it does it without the weight, cost, or mechanical complexity of a full mixing unit. The mixer stays on the pad, keeps processing the next batch, and the wagon shuttles loads wherever they need to go.

There is also a ration quality argument. The Split That Actually Determines the Answer
Three numbers do most of the work here: batch count per day, distance from pad to furthest bunk, and how much labour you currently lose re-agitating or reloading settled feed.
If you are running more than four or five batches a day and each one is genuinely pushing your mixer’s rated capacity, that is a processing problem. A second tub is worth looking at. Matching mixer size to herd scale matters more than most people allow for when they are in the middle of expanding, and buying the wrong capacity now creates a different bottleneck twelve months later.
If the batch count is manageable but you are spending too much time in transit, the delivery wagon is probably the better spend. It gets the mixed feed where it needs to go while the tub stays productive. One driver on the wagon, one on the loader filling the mixer, and the system runs without the two jobs tripping over each other.
Labour is the third variable and often the most honest one. If someone on your team is routinely remixing feed at the bunk because it has separated in transit, or spending time at the end of a run cleaning out a partially discharged mixer that sat too long, that cost is real even if it does not appear on an equipment invoice.
When Both Makes Sense
Some spring expansions genuinely need both. A 400-cow herd that adds 120 springers and splits into two separate feed sites is a different problem from one that just adds distance. In that case, you are looking at a primary mixer on each site, or one mixer and a wagon that does a continuous loop between two bunks while the mixer reloads.
The truck-mounted custom boxes in the larger capacity ranges are worth considering for operations at that scale. They keep a full commercial tractor free for other work while a dedicated truck handles distribution. That setup is common in large northern Victoria and Riverina feedlot operations and increasingly shows up in intensive pasture-based dairies that have moved to TMR or partial TMR systems.
Timing the Decision
Late winter is when this choice has to be made. Lead times on quality equipment still run three to four months from some manufacturers, and waiting until the spring flush is already on you means running short. The farms that get through October well are almost always the ones that locked in their equipment in July or August.
The calculation is not complicated, but it requires honest numbers. Count your batches, measure your longest run, and ask your team where the time actually goes. That usually gives you the answer faster than any spec sheet will.
Whichever direction you go, the mixer and the delivery system need to match in capacity and discharge geometry. A wagon that cannot take a full batch from your tub, or one with a discharge rate that outpaces your bunk space, creates a different kind of frustration. Get the pairing right and the whole system runs cleaner than either piece would on its own.
