Winter pen-pack in KwaZulu-Natal does not behave like the manure you spread in autumn. Six to eight weeks of cattle standing on the same surface compresses the material into something closer to structural fill than spreadable organic matter. By the time you open the gate on a late-winter pad clear, the top 80–100 mm has dried and crusted, the layer below is semi-solid and dense, and the bottom is often wet and heavy from urine accumulation. A compact single-auger side discharge handles this well if you work with the material rather than against it. A 1006 is purpose-built for exactly this kind of yard: tight spaces, a single auger, one axle, and enough expeller speed to break up compacted material without needing a dual-auger machine behind it.
What follows is a sequence built for the first full pad clear 1006 pass of the season, specifically under KZN conditions: warm days, cool mornings, pads that have been closed since late April.
Staging Tractor, Gate and First Corner
The first mistake operators make is driving straight into the pad from the entry gate and loading the hopper on the first corner. You will bog before the first third of the hopper is full.
Start with your tractor outside the gate and check tyre pressure. Winter sitting softens the ground where the drain channels run, and low-pressure tyres spread the load better than anything else you can do in five minutes. If your tractor has front ballast, leave it on. You need the front axle weighted when pulling a loaded single-axle spreader up a slight incline toward the gate.
Before you move the loader, open the far gate of the pad first. You want an exit before you have a loaded machine. Getting a full 1006 stuck in a single-gate yard with no turnaround room is the kind of problem that costs two hours and some pride.
Work the first corner from the outside in. Pile material toward the centre of the pad rather than loading directly from the corner. Corner accumulation in a compacted pad tends to be the densest point because cattle shelter there. If you load that material first and try to drive out, the hopper weight sits exactly where your tractor’s rear axle has the least traction advantage. Let the loader break that corner material loose, move it toward the centre, and load from the flatter mid-section first.
Keep your first load light. Fifty to sixty percent of hopper capacity on the first pass is not being cautious; it is testing the ground under load before you commit to a full hopper on soil you have not driven since April. The 1006 is a single-auger machine, and material flow responds well to partial loads when the pack is still breaking up at the start of the session.

The Pass Pattern That Avoids Double-Handling
Pen-packed manure has structure. It does not load evenly from a static pile the way fresh manure does. The tendency with a compact spreader is to load from whatever is nearest and then figure out the pattern later. That approach almost always creates a windrow on the second or third pass that you end up going back over.
Work from the far end of the pad toward the gate. This keeps your exit clear and means you are always driving a progressively lighter machine as you approach the gate rather than building weight toward a confined exit point. Load from rows parallel to the long axis of the pad. When you have pushed all material into rows with the loader, you can move systematically without crossing your own spread path.
Set your expeller speed and deflector shield before the first pass and leave them there. The 1006 gives you door opening, expeller RPM, and deflector shield as your three spread controls. For compacted winter manure, you want enough expeller speed to pulverise the lumps rather than just throwing them intact, and the deflector set to keep material out of fencelines. Adjusting mid-run because one load seemed wetter than the last is how you end up with uneven application across the field. If the material changes significantly between loads, stop and reset; do not chase it on the move.
On a standard rectangular KZN dairy pad, five to six passes along the length will clear most of the material. The last pass will scrape the corners and the gate approach. That material is usually the wettest because it has been pushed around. Spread it last on a separate field run rather than mixing it with the earlier dryer loads if application rate consistency matters to you.

Tractor Speed and Ground Pressure on Soft Pads
KZN pads vary. Some are concrete, some compacted gravel, some bare earth. The earth-floor pads are the problem ones in late winter because the surface looks firm but the frost-free ground under a few centimetres of dried crust can be saturated from mid-season rain. Keep your field speed below 8 km/h on the first two passes, particularly if you are on an earth-floor pad. A loaded 1006 does not weigh as much as a dual-axle machine, but a single-axle spreader concentrates all its load on one axle point, and that axle sits directly behind the tractor’s rear wheels. Any soft line in the ground shows up as a rut that gets worse with each pass.
Watch your tractor’s rear wheel spin on the first field exit from the pad. If it is spinning under load, you are at the limit of what that ground will carry. Reduce load size, not ground speed. Ground speed affects your application rate; load size affects your tyre pressure on the soil.
What to Inspect Before Moving to the Next Yard
This is where most operators lose time. They finish a yard and move straight to the next one without stopping. Then the second yard is halfway done when something fails that would have taken thirty seconds to catch.
Check the expeller housing for trapped material. Compacted pen-pack has a way of wedging between the hammer faces and the housing walls, particularly on the first run of the season when the hammers have been sitting idle and any residual material from the previous autumn has hardened in place. If you can hear an uneven rhythm from the expeller during spreading, that is the first sign of a partial blockage. Stop, disengage PTO, and clear it before the next load.
Look at the hammer faces while you are there. The hard-faced hammers on the 20 Series machines are built for long wear, but the first run after winter is when any impact damage from the previous season becomes visible. A chipped or cracked hammer face changes the throw pattern in ways you may not notice until you see uneven spread on the field. Run your hand along the hopper floor at the auger trough. Winter pen-pack leaves a layer of fine grit and mineral residue that builds up in the auger channel. On a single-auger machine, this matters more than on a dual-auger model because there is only one auger doing all the lateral work. Any restriction in that channel reduces the feed rate to the expeller and creates uneven material flow.
Check the door opening mechanism. The door controls discharge volume, and a sticky or partially seized door linkage is the most common reason operators see inconsistent spread thickness across a run. Lubricate the pivot points, confirm the door opens and closes fully through its range, and then move on.

Flush the hopper and auger trough with a light wash before parking. KZN winters are dry enough that residual manure in the trough will crust overnight and be harder to clear in the morning than it would have been at the end of the shift. It takes ten minutes. The hopper floor and the expeller housing are the two places where that overnight crust does the most damage to your start time the next morning.
Grease the expeller shaft bearings before you put the machine away. Not tomorrow. Before you park it.
