Questions to Settle Before Ordering a 7008 VT

Late winter is the wrong time to still be vague about specifications. If a 7008 VT is going on order before the spring flush, the questions to settle before ordering a 7008 VT are not the kind you sort out after the paperwork is signed. Three of them matter more than the rest, and none of them is about price.

Translate Chamber Volume Into Batches, Not Just Capacity

The 7008 VT sits in the middle of the VT series, which spans 6 to 21 cubic metres. Knowing that an 8 m³ (283 cu ft) mixer exists tells you almost nothing useful on its own. What matters is how many batches per day it takes to feed your herd, and what those batches actually weigh once the ration is loaded.

Ration density is the variable most operators underestimate. A dry roughage-heavy mix for dry cows loads light and fills the chamber fast. A wet silage-based lactation ration is significantly denser, and the same nominal volume delivers a heavier batch. Your mixer supplier should be working from your actual ingredient list, not a generic dry matter assumption.

Run the numbers forward, not backward. Start with your daily feed requirement by group, divide by the batch weight you can realistically achieve for each ration type, and you get your batch count. If that number pushes you past three or four runs before mid-morning, especially in a Free State operation where summer heat will already be compressing your feeding window, the 7008 may be undersized. If two batches covers the herd comfortably, it may be exactly right.

Getting this wrong in either direction costs money. An undersized machine means extra runs, extra fuel, and extra PTO hours. An oversized one means poor fill ratios and inconsistent mixing, because vertical auger geometry only works properly when the chamber is loaded correctly. Hitch, PTO, and Gate Width Before Anything Else

A trailed mixer that does not fit the tractor is a problems that shows up on day one and never goes away. There are three mechanical questions worth settling before the machine is even quoted.

First, hitch height. The tow hitch on a trailed mixer is fixed at manufacture. Your tractor’s drawbar height needs to match the category, or you are shimming and guessing on every coupling. Check the specification sheet against the actual drawbar height on your tractor, not the handbook figure.

Second, PTO geometry. A large-capacity mixer wagon puts real angular stress on the driveline at full lock, particularly when reversing into a covered shed or a narrow feed passage. If you are working in a KwaZulu-Natal operation with a covered feed alley that does not allow a wide arc approach, the angle at full steering lock matters more than it does on an open yard. Get the tractor wheelbase into the conversation.

Third, gate width. This sounds obvious and it still catches people. The 7008 is a trailed machine on a single axle, and the tub width at the widest point needs to physically clear every gate between the storage area and the feed bunk, including any that are propped open and assumed to be wide enough. Walk the route. Measure it. The machine cannot change once it is on the yard.

Turning radius in the feed alley is related but separate. A single-axle trailed mixer turns tighter than a twin-axle configuration, which is an advantage in constrained yards. If this is a genuine constraint for your setup, the case for a single-axle machine in tight yards is worth reading before you finalise the specification.

Lead Time Is the Specification Nobody Puts on the Sheet

The 7008 VT is built to order. LEO Agriculture fabricates from facilities in South Africa and the United States, and their stated lead time sits at three to four months. That is genuinely shorter than what most of the market offers, but three to four months is still three to four months. Order in late winter and the machine arrives well into the season if anything delays it.

The part that catches operators off guard is specification changes. Once a machine is in fabrication, a change to the discharge side, the knife configuration, or the kicker sizing does not just delay delivery by a week. It can push the build back to the queue, which in practice means losing the season entirely. The specification needs to be final before the order is placed, not finalised later as the build progresses.

Kicker sizing is one example worth flagging. The kicker sits at the outer, lower leading edge of the auger and its job is to pull feed back into the auger and drive a rolling circulation through the tub. A kicker that is too small for a high-hay ration leaves dead spots. One sized for dry roughage on a wet silage operation creates unnecessary resistance. The correct size for your ration type is a pre-order decision. Changing it afterwards is not straightforward once fabrication has started.

Knife configuration is another. The modular V2 knife system uses tungsten-carbide coated replaceable edges on a flexible base plate, and the inner and outer blades are interchangeable. That design reduces long-term replacement cost because you are only replacing the worn outer section rather than the full knife. But the number and placement of knives is set during the build. For operators running a high-fibre ration with long-stemmed hay, this specification matters from day one.

Batch count, hitch and gate geometry, and lead-time discipline are not glamorous topics. They sit well below mixing homogeneity and auger design in most sales conversations. But they are the things that determine whether the machine works from the first week or creates friction for years.
