Pre-Spring Checks on a 1008 Before Free State Pack Moves

Late winter in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal pens is a different animal to summer spreading. Material that sat compressed through June and July does not behave like fresh slurry. It comes out in dense, laminated slabs, and the moisture has been pressed down over months of cold nights and dry days. A compact single-auger side-discharge that cruised through your December runs will meet that pack and let you know very quickly whether it was properly prepared.

The 1008 is a capable machine, but its 8 m³ (285 ft³) heaped capacity and single-auger layout mean every mechanical weakness gets exposed under dense pen pack. A short workshop session now, before the loading starts, is worth two days of downtime in August.

Starting with the Hopper, Expeller, and Discharge Path

Inspect the inside of the hopper before you load a single kilogram. Free State pack winters hard. Even on a stainless hopper, residual material from late autumn can seize in corners and around the discharge chute opening during cold spells. Run your hand along the front and rear panels and the lower floor junction. Any cured pack sitting there will act as a dam under load and redirect material into the auger bearing rather than toward the expeller.

The expeller shroud deserves its own look. Fabricated hard-faced hammers on the 1008 are oil-impregnated through their bushings, but a winter of sitting still invites moisture into the gap between the hammer and the pin. Spin each hammer by hand. If one is stiff, free it before the season. A hammer that cannot swing freely loses its breakup force and increases shock load on the shaft.

Check the discharge chute opening and the hydraulic deflector shield. Dried pack can bridge across the opening in as little as a few centimetres of gap, and a stiff or partially seized deflector limits your spread width adjustment on the first day. Grease the deflector pivot and confirm it moves through its full range under hydraulic pressure before you leave the workshop.

Stainless construction on the hopper and expeller shroud gives you a meaningful advantage here. Painted steel in the same position would already be showing corrosion at the floor weld seams after a wet late-autumn. Chain Tension and Paddle Condition After Light Winter Duty

Light winter work is almost harder on drive chain than heavy summer use. Under consistent load, chain wears gradually and evenly. Sitting with occasional short runs lets links stiffen, allows corrosion to develop at the pins, and gives any fine grit that migrated past the oil-bath enclosure a chance to embed. After months of that, first-day tension is almost never what you set it to last autumn.

Before the season’s first load, measure the chain tension and compare it to the manufacturer’s setting. Slack chain under sudden load from dense pack does not slip gradually; it skips, and a skipped drive chain in a compact side-discharge translates directly to shock loading on the auger gearbox. That is a costly repair when it happens mid-paddock in August.

While you are there, inspect the sling paddles. Check for cracking at the mounting bolt holes and confirm that none are bent or missing. Even one absent paddle creates an imbalance that you will feel as a vibration at operating speed, and under the kind of dense, fibrous material that comes out of a Free State kraal pen, the remaining paddles carry a disproportionate share of the load.

First-Week Load Limits for Free State Pack Density

The 1008’s rated maximum load is 5,000 kg. That number assumes material density consistent with normal commercial spreading. Free State pack at the end of winter does not behave like normal commercial spreading. Pen pack that has been compressed and dried over several months can exceed 900 kg/m³, compared to roughly 600–650 kg/m³ for fresh summer manure. Load the same volume, and you may already be at or past the machine’s rated load before the hopper looks full.

Cap your loads for the first week. Start at around 60 to 65 percent of the hopper’s heaped capacity and work up. Watch the tractor’s PTO load during the first auger revolution at each fill level. If the auger hesitates before it bites through, the load is too heavy for current conditions. A hesitation is not just a torque issue; it is the beginning of a shear-pin or gearbox event.

Ground speed matters as much as load size. Dense pack fed at the wrong rate will bridge above the auger, starve the expeller, and then release in a lump that hits the hammers all at once. Keep ground speed conservative for the first week, 4 to 6 km/h in most conditions, and observe the spread pattern. A consistent arc means the material is feeding evenly. An intermittent or pulsing arc means bridging is occurring at the floor-to-auger junction, and you need to slow down further or reduce fill level.

The larger-diameter auger on the 20 Series models is specifically engineered to address this bridging problem. The geometry creates steeper sidewalls inside the hopper and widens the base by 200 mm (8 inches), which reduces pack bridging over the auger. The 1008 does not have that advantage, which is exactly why load management discipline matters more on this machine when the material is dense.

A Few Practical Points Before the First Load

  • Check tractor hydraulic oil temperature before engaging the deflector shield in cold morning conditions. Cold hydraulic oil moves slowly and can mask a genuine shield fault.
  • Confirm the PTO shaft guard is secure and that the shaft slides freely through its full compression range. Winter storage sometimes leaves PTO shafts partially seized from dried grease.
  • Load the first batch from the edge of the pack rather than the face. Edge material is generally looser and gives the auger and expeller a chance to warm up before they meet the dense centre.
  • After the first full run, re-check chain tension. A newly tensioned drive chain will seat under its first real load and often needs a small adjustment.

LEO Agriculture’s 1008 is spec’d at 65 to 90 hp minimum tractor requirement. Running it at the bottom of that range on heavy pack puts the PTO clutch under sustained stress. If your tractor is at the lower end, use lower gears and shorter loads until conditions ease.
