Corn silage harvest in Alberta moves fast. When the crop is ready, you are not waiting three days for a gearbox teardown or a load-cell swap you should have caught in the shop two weeks earlier. The operators who get through first cut without a mid-batch breakdown are almost never luckier than everyone else. Their machines were looked at by someone with tools, not just a walkround before first thing.
Third-cut haying put real hours on these machines over summer. Dry hay is hard on knives, kickers take a beating from slugging, and gearbox oil gets heat-cycled more times than most people track. Before a VT returns to the silage line, there is a short list of checks that separates a clean silage season from an expensive one. Most Alberta shops run longer pre-season checklists than they need to. The actual failure points are fewer and more specific.

Planetary Gearbox and Closed-Loop Oil: Start Here
The gearbox is where a summer of hard hay work shows up first. Heat cycles break down oil faster than hours alone, and if the return line is sitting low or there is air in the circuit, first silage load will find that out for you.
Pull the sight glass and check fill level before you do anything else. On machines with steel oil reservoirs mounted high above the gearbox, the return line sits above the feed line by design, which keeps the gearbox full even as oil expands in heat. That arrangement matters because a gearbox that feeds from the bottom of the reservoir is drawing from the lowest, coolest oil, often before the return flow from the previous load has fully settled back in.
Check for cloudy or milky oil. Summer condensation, especially with big overnight temperature swings out on the prairies, will push moisture into the circuit if seals have started to go. Dark, gritty oil means the filter element has been doing real work and is probably due for replacement before silage. Silage loads are heavier and wetter than dry hay, and a tired gearbox running marginal oil will not survive the first heavy week.

While you are in there, confirm the gearbox fittings are tight and that the hydraulic oil lines show no kinking or surface cracking. Hydraulic hose lines are made to carry petroleum-based liquids and hold up better against feed acids and high-vibration environments than rubber alternatives, but they still need a visual every season. Check for fretting where lines pass through guides you cannot see from the cab. A puddle under the machine after the first silage batch is a diagnostic result, not a plan.
Auger Knife Edges, Kickers, and Load-Cell Mounts
This is where a lot of Alberta shops underestimate how fast silage destroys already-worn components. Dry hay blunts knife edges gradually. Silage, especially the first heavy, wet loads of the season, hits blunted edges hard and either stalls the auger or just fails to cut properly. Feed packs instead of rolling, mix time stretches out, and fuel use climbs. None of that shows on the display until you start tracking batch times and wondering why everything is slower.
Pull the wear edges off the backer plates and check them under light. On a two-piece modular knife system, the tungsten-coated replaceable edge is what wears. The backer plate stays mounted. If the serrations are gone or the edge is visibly rounded, replace the edges before first silage load. The backer plate does not need to come off and is not a regular purchase item. You are only spending on the worn piece.
Kickers are worth a dedicated look. The kicker sits on the outer, lower leading edge of the auger and its job is to pull material back in from the wall and maintain that rolling boil that keeps the mix moving. A worn or bent kicker leaves dead spots. Material packs against the wall, the auger has to work harder against static load instead of moving mass, torque demand goes up, and mix uniformity drops. On a wet silage ration that is already asking more of the machine, a non-functioning kicker will cost you more per batch than the replacement itself.
Kicker sizing matters too. High-hay rations generally want the larger kicker. Wet silage rations run better with the smaller profile to avoid over-agitation of material that is already dense. Bolt-on kickers can be swapped between sizes at this pre-season service to match the coming ration. If you are running a machine through the silage season on the same kicker spec you used for dry hay summer, check that the size still fits the job.
Load-cell mounts are often left off pre-season checklists entirely. They should not be. Corrosion at the mount points, loose fasteners after a summer of vibration, or a cracked mount bracket will throw scale readings out by enough to hurt batch accuracy. Clean the mount points, torque the fasteners to spec, and zero the scale on a known weight before first load. Silage batches run heavy, and a 10,000 kg rated load cell is only giving you accurate numbers if the mount holding it is solid.

Torque Marks, Hose Inspection, and the Habits That Prevent Roadside Teardowns
Torque marking is one of those habits that looks like extra work until the day it saves you two hours on a county road in October. Any fastener that should be torqued to spec on a feed mixer gets a paint mark across the head and the surface it sits against. If the mark has moved, the fastener has moved. There is no ambiguity and no second-guessing at the roadside. The pre-silage service is the right time to check every torque mark on the machine, run the torque wrench over anything that has shifted, and remark.
Hose inspection should be methodical. Start at the hydraulic connections on the gearbox and work outward. Look for chafe marks where lines contact the frame or auger shroud. Check that no fittings have worked loose at the loctite joint. Look for any sign of kinking that would restrict flow. On lines routed under the auger where you cannot see from the cab, use a mirror or a light. Oil leaking from a restricted line does not always puddle immediately, and a slow restriction will overheat the circuit before the operator notices anything on the ground.
The same principle applies to chain retention for hay. After a summer of frozen-bale work, check that the logging chain is free, not fouled with hay wrapping, and that the anchor points on the frame are tight. A chain that is seized with wrapped material will not flex as intended on the first heavy silage bale.

The full pre-silage checklist for a vertical mixer is not as long as most shops make it. Planetary gearbox oil condition and fill level. Closed-loop circuit integrity. Knife edge condition and kicker sizing for the ration. Load-cell mount integrity and scale zero. Torque mark verification on all critical fasteners. Hose routing and connection integrity from gearbox to hydraulic couplers.
That is a half-day job on a machine that has been well maintained through summer. On a machine that has not, those checks will find exactly the issues that would have put you on the side of a road in week one of silage season.
