Drought changes the math on manure spreading. When forage is short and operators are leaning hard on every tonne of pen-packed material to carry nutrients back into the ground, the spreader stops being a cleanup tool and starts being a precision applicator. That shift puts real pressure on equipment that most people only think about when something breaks.

What Dry Summers Do to Pen Pack
Pen-packed manure that has sat through a hot, low-moisture summer behaves differently from material that was loaded and spread in wetter conditions. The outer layer crusts. The core compresses under animal traffic. By the time it gets loaded into a spreader, you are dealing with uneven density through the same load: a heavy, brick-like mass on the floor and looser material higher up.
When the chain drives that material toward the beaters, the drag is not constant. It spikes. A hardened slab catches, the chain takes the full tension, and then releases. That shock cycle, repeated through an entire load and across dozens of loads per day, is what separates agricultural-grade chain from something built to handle it.
Agricultural-grade chain is designed around a steady tension assumption. That is fine for normal conditions. Under drought-hardened pen pack, you are no longer dealing with steady tension. You are dealing with impact loads, and the chain either handles them or it does not.

Grade 80 Mining Chain: Why the Spec Matters
Grade 80 chain is rated for dynamic, shock-type loading. It gets its name from its minimum breaking force, expressed in kilonewtons per millimeter squared of chain cross-section, and it is the same specification used in underground mining equipment, where sudden load spikes and catastrophic failure are not abstract risks.
The distinction matters in a spreader because the failure modes are different between grades. Lower-grade chain under sustained shock loading does not always snap cleanly. It stretches. Links elongate, pitch spacing grows, and the chain starts skipping on the drive sprocket. At that point you either catch it during daily maintenance or you find out about it mid-field when the chain derails with a full load on board.
The cross-section matters just as much as the grade. A three-quarter inch chain has more steel in each link than a half-inch chain of identical grade. Under the same load, the stress on each link is lower, and fatigue accumulates more slowly. That translates directly into chain life, especially in high-cycle commercial operations where the machine is running multiple loads per day through a dry summer.

- Measure chain pitch against the manufacturer’s new-chain specification. If links have elongated by more than two to three percent, the chain is stretching under load and the sprocket engagement is already compromised.
- Check for side-bow along a straight section of the floor run. Lateral flex that was not there when the chain was new indicates link wear on the side plates, not just the pins.
- Inspect drive sprocket teeth for hooking. A hooked tooth profile accelerates chain wear and also points back at a chain that has been running loose.
- Look at the tension adjustment range. If you are already near the end of the adjustment travel, the chain has stretched as far as compensation can manage. Replacement is close.
None of this is complicated. It is the kind of check that takes twenty minutes before the season starts and costs nothing compared to a mid-field chain failure with a tractor and spreader sitting idle while you find parts.
The Bigger Picture: Manure as a Managed Input
Drought years push producers toward treating every nutrient source as a managed input rather than a disposal problem. That thinking is sound agronomy. But it only works if the equipment actually places the material where it is intended to go, at the rate it is intended to go there, without mechanical failures that interrupt the operation and cost time and money that tight margins cannot absorb.
