Late winter on the Free State highveld has a particular feeling. The veld is dry, the mornings are sharp, and the first green flush is still weeks away. For dairy and feedlot operators, this is also the window that determines what equipment sits in the yard when spring work actually starts. Miss it, and you are not waiting a few extra weeks. You are waiting through the whole first rotation.

The Build Window Is Shorter Than Most Buyers Expect

Commercial TMR mixers are not shelf stock. Fabrication typically runs three to four months from confirmed order to delivery. That window applies whether the machine is built locally in South Africa or shipped in from an overseas manufacturing facility. A decision made in August puts iron on the ground before the season breaks. A decision made in October, once the grass starts moving and the urgency feels real, lands the machine in the middle of peak work, or after it.

The calendar maths are blunt. If your spring feeding programme starts in late September or early October, the order needs to be in the ground by July at the latest for a comfortable delivery. August is not early. August is borderline. September is gambling.

This is not unique to any one manufacturer. Fabrication slots across the commercial mixer market fill from the front. The buyers who plan in winter get the machines they specified. The buyers who wait get whatever build slot is left, and sometimes that means a configuration they did not want, or a longer queue than the quoted lead time suggested.

What Gets Locked Before the Forage Plan Is Written

Ordering a commercial mixer is not just a capacity decision. Discharge layout, scale system, auger configuration, and whether the machine mounts to a truck or trails behind a tractor: these all have to be settled before fabrication starts. Changing your mind halfway through a build costs time you do not have.

For farms running 300 to 600 cows, the configuration questions matter more than buyers often realise at the start of the process. A rear-discharge machine suits bunk layouts where the tractor backs along the feed fence. A side-discharge setup works differently when the bunk geometry requires it. Capacity choices interact with how many batches you need to run per day, how much forage you are carrying, and what your bale size and moisture content look like in spring.

Cells rated to half that capacity are workable on lighter loads but will be stressed if you push batch size through a wet silage flush. The scale is also your ration record. The farms that have their mixer running in September made their order decision in winter. That is the whole of it. The specification conversation is easier when forage plans are still flexible. The delivery date is only moveable before fabrication starts.
