Not every farm runs a 150-cow dairy with a dedicated tractor parked beside the feed bunk. Plenty of operations in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal sit at 20 to 40 cows, a few hundred sheep, or a mixed small holding where the tractor is already doing three other jobs before breakfast. Labour and Cost on Operations Under 40 Cows

The labour arithmetic on small farms is brutal. One person typically handles feeding, milking, and general yard work.
