Most spreading programmes in South Africa are planned around fields, not the yards where the manure actually sits. The result is a machine that handles paddock work fine but jams up at the first gate, can’t complete a turn inside a pen, or sits idle while a loader struggles to reach the hopper. If your dairy or feedlot was built before the current generation of large-capacity rigs, those constraints are the real planning problem.
A compact side discharge spreader doesn’t solve every problem. But for late-winter kraal cleanout, it solves the ones that matter most.

Yard Layout Comes Before Capacity
A standard kraal gate in a Free State or KwaZulu-Natal dairy is typically somewhere between 3.5 m and 4.5 m wide. Some older installations are narrower. A dual-auger commercial spreader in the 10,000 L to 16,000 L range is built for production, not for turning inside a 12 m pen. The machine gets in, and then the tractor can’t swing far enough to line up with the exit without clipping a corner post.
Single-auger models in the 1006 class are built to a noticeably tighter profile. The shorter hopper length reduces the turning circle, and the lower loading height means a skid-steer or compact telehandler can reach the hopper without being elevated to a point where it becomes unstable. Those two factors together determine whether a spreading programme can run inside the yard or has to wait until material is moved out, which adds a handling step and loses time in the narrow pre-spring window.
Before ordering anything, walk the worst lane in your yard with a tape measure. Gate width and lane length set the outer limit. If a tractor plus spreader combination exceeds that envelope, the programme stalls on the first day regardless of rated capacity.
Winter Pen-Pack Loads Differently Than Fresh Scrape
Manure that has been compacted through a Free State winter is a different material from the loose, partially liquid scrape that comes off a daily-cleaned yard. It packs tightly, holds its shape under load, and does not flow freely into the expeller. Density runs high. Moisture content is lower than operators expect, which means the weight per cubic metre is also higher than it would be later in the season.
A smaller hopper loaded to the brim with pen-packed material puts the full weight penalty on the front axle of a mid-range tractor. Ground is often still soft in August and September, particularly in lower-lying areas of Mpumalanga. The combination of a heavy, dense load and soft ground is exactly how compaction damage happens to the very paddocks you are trying to fertilise.
The practical rule for a 1006-class spreader running pen-packed kraal manure is to hold back on fill level for the first few passes until you have a read on ground conditions and the material’s actual density. The expeller on a compact side discharge handles pen-packed material differently to what it does with fresh or semi-liquid manure. Dense material tends to arch in the hopper and feed unevenly unless the auger is running and the door opening is set conservatively. Starting with a partially open door and working up gives the operator a chance to see whether the spread pattern is even before committing to a full pass. Matching Herd Size to a 1006-Class Volume
This is where a lot of spring orders go wrong. The 1006 is a smaller single-auger machine. It is suited to smaller farms or specialised applications. If you have a 400-cow Free State dairy that has been wintering cattle through six months of accumulated kraal manure, the daily volume to clear before the rains arrive is a real number, and it needs to match the machine’s output per hour.
Running the sums is straightforward. A cow in a covered kraal produces roughly 55 kg to 65 kg of manure per day, though compaction and bedding additions change the apparent volume. At 400 cows over a 90-day winter accumulation, the total stockpile can easily run past 2,000 tonnes. A compact spreader doing ten to twelve passes per hour of actual spreading time will clear that, but the programme needs to run for several weeks without interruption. That changes the maintenance calculus: a machine that loses a day to a blocked expeller or a worn bearing in peak spreading season is a programme problem, not just a workshop problem.
If daily tonnes to clear exceed what a single 1006 can handle in the available hours between morning milking and afternoon routine, the answer is either a second machine or a step up to a dual-auger model, not overloading the compact. Overloading on density accelerates wear on the expeller hammers and floor chain in ways that do not show up immediately but become expensive before the next season.
For operations where the volume is genuinely in the 1006 range, the machine fits well. Orchards, smaller drylot beef pens, or dairies up to around 100 to 150 cows are realistic territory. KwaZulu-Natal operations with multiple smaller satellite pens rather than one large central yard often find the compact’s manoeuvrability worth more than extra rated capacity.
What to Check Before the Season Starts
Late winter is the right time to go through the machine, not the day before the first load. Expeller hammer wear is the first place to look on any sling spreader that ran a full previous season. On the 20 Series machines, the hammers are replaceable and weight-balanced, which means replacing them in matched sets rather than individually when wear starts affecting spread pattern consistency. Auger bearings are the second item. Pen-packed manure forces them harder than liquid or semi-liquid material, and a bearing that is marginal on light material will fail under the load density of late-winter kraal cleanout.
