Most buyers buying a rear-discharge spreader will read the chain spec exactly once, probably on a page buried in the brochure, and then never think about it again until something breaks. That’s understandable. Chain looks like chain. But the grade stamped on the link is doing a lot of work, and understanding what it actually means changes how you evaluate a machine before you buy one.
Grade 80 Mining Chain: What the Number Means
Chain grades are a working load limit rating, not just a marketing tier. Grade 80 chain, at the same diameter, carries a working load limit roughly 25% higher than Grade 70 transport chain. The ¾” size used in underground mining equipment is specified for exactly the conditions you’d expect: constant shock loading, abrasion from grit and debris, and no forgiveness for a weak link in the middle of a shift. Mining chain doesn’t get inspected between every pass. It has to hold up through the whole cycle.
That’s why the mining spec transfers so directly to spreader service. A rear-discharge spreader running through pen-packed manure isn’t loaded smoothly. The floor chain jerks, stalls, and surges with every slug of compacted material. Grade 70 handles the rated tensile load fine on a test bench. Break Strength Is the Wrong Number to Watch
This is where a lot of buyers get misled. They compare chain specs by break strength and assume higher is better. Break strength matters when you’re pulling something to failure. In spreader service, that almost never happens. Chain in this application almost always fails by fatigue fracture at the link shoulder, not by tensile overload.
Fatigue fracture starts as a microscopic crack at a stress concentration point, usually where the link curves. Every load cycle grows that crack a little. The chain looks fine, passes a visual inspection, and then snaps on a Tuesday morning when there’s a full load on board and the chain tension isn’t anything out of the ordinary.
What resists fatigue failure isn’t break strength. It’s hardness grade and heat treatment. Grade 80 chain is manufactured to a higher alloy spec and heat-treated through the full cross-section of the link, not just the surface. That’s what gives it resistance to the kind of cycling that kills agricultural chain. A Grade 70 chain with a higher break-strength number on the spec sheet can still fail faster in fatigue because the material treatment isn’t there.

The Beater Tips Are Part of the Same System
Chain grade doesn’t exist in isolation. The load pulses that the chain has to absorb are shaped in large part by what the beaters are doing above it.
Vertical beater tips wear unevenly. The outer edge takes the most abuse, and once a tip starts losing material it throws the beater out of balance. An unbalanced beater doesn’t just vibrate, it creates irregular torque pulses that travel straight down to the floor chain every rotation. Even correctly rated chain accumulates fatigue faster when those pulses are uneven and unpredictable.

What to Actually Check Before You Buy
When you’re evaluating a rear-discharge manure spreader, here are the things worth pressing on:
- What chain grade is specified, and what diameter? Grade and diameter together determine working load limit. Grade 80 at ¾” is the relevant benchmark for commercial spreader service.
- How is the chain tensioned and adjusted? A chain that runs loose accelerates wear at every link, regardless of grade.
- Are the beater tips reversible, and what steel spec? AR400 is the floor for abrasion resistance. Tips that aren’t reversible cost more over the machine’s life and force you to replace them sooner or run with uneven wear.
- What is the floor material? Chain wears faster against rough mild steel than against AR-plate or stainless-lined floors. The chain grade and the floor spec belong in the same conversation.

That’s not indefinite. Chain stretch is the practical indicator to watch.
