Grass carries the herd from March through October in a good year. Cork and Tipperary producers build their whole system around that, and rightly so. The economics only work if you’re maximising grazed grass. But the shoulder periods are longer and messier than anyone likes to admit, and the days when weather shuts the paddock without warning are not rare events. They’re part of every season.
A still vertical TMR mixer doesn’t contradict a grass-first philosophy. It covers the gaps that grass cannot.
What Changes When the Paddock Closes
Wet ground in August is not unusual across Munster. When the going is too soft for cattle to travel without damage, or when bought-in silage or hay needs blending with the existing forage base, you need something more controlled than throwing bales over a gate. Cows that have been grazing mixed swards don’t take well to abrupt ration changes, and the liver and rumen consequences of badly managed shoulder-period feeding show up in the bulk tank within days.
Homogeneous TMR matters most when forage sources change quickly. A machine that blends shoulder-period rations accurately, batch by batch, smooths the transition from grazed grass to full confinement better than any other approach. The alternative, feeding ingredients separately and hoping the herd doesn’t sort, tends to work until it doesn’t.
Bought-in forage adds a further complication. Dry matter and chop length vary by supplier, by stack, sometimes by bale. A vertical mixer cuts and integrates inconsistent material into something uniform. That consistency is harder to achieve with static feeding or a delivery wagon receiving from a stationary horizontal unit.
The Size Question for Irish Yards
Most Cork family dairy units were not laid out with a large mixer in mind. The feed passage widths, the gate clearances, the turning circles at the end of the shed: these were designed for tractors and diet feeders from a different era. Putting a 16 m³ machine into a yard built for 120 cows is a daily frustration.
The argument for a compact vertical mixer on a grazing unit is straightforward. You’re not mixing full confinement tonnage every day. You’re running buffer rations, hospital pen feeds, dry cow mixes, and weaned calf rations on a rotating basis. A machine sized for those groups handles the work without the dead weight of a machine built for peak feedlot throughput.
Compact single-auger vertical mixers, in the 3 to 6 m³ range, fit most older Irish sheds without modification. Low loading height matters when you’re working a bale trailer or a silage pit and there’s no loader height to spare. Narrow overall width matters in feed alleys that weren’t designed to be driven. These aren’t luxury specifications. On a tight yard, they’re the difference between a machine that gets used daily and one that gets used when the driver is patient enough.
For operations that have grown to the point where a single compact unit no longer covers the full range of groups, the question of what an 8 m³ twin-auger machine can realistically handle on a mid-sized family dairy is worth working through before committing to anything larger.
Wet Travel and What It Does to Your Machine Choice
Travel weight matters from October onwards on most grazing farms. A fully loaded mixer moving across a soft gateway or down a worn concrete lane puts stress on the yard surface and the machine. Grass-based units don’t have the hard-standing infrastructure that a housed feedlot takes for granted.
A buffer-sized vertical mixer carries less at each trip. On a 150-cow grazing system, that usually means smaller, more frequent batches during confinement periods rather than one large mix per day. That pattern suits the infrastructure better, and it keeps ration freshness higher when cattle are eating in confined groups rather than stretching feed intake across a long grazing day.
There’s also the question of tractor match. A compact vertical mixer in the 3 to 6 m³ range typically suits tractors in the 60 to 100 hp class. Most Cork grazing units have that tractor already. You’re not buying a second machine to drive the mixer. That matters when the decision is being made at the shoulder of a season when cash flow is tighter than it was in July.
Precision Still Counts at Small Scale
Small batches don’t forgive scale errors the way large ones do. On a 15 m³ mix, a 50 kg error in concentrate weight represents less than 1% of the batch. On a 3 m³ mix for a hospital pen, the same error is significant. This is why weighing accuracy on a compact machine carries as much practical weight as it does on a commercial unit.

What the Grazing Season Actually Demands
The grazing period on a well-managed Munster unit runs long. But long doesn’t mean uninterrupted. The weeks on either side of full grazing, and the spells within the season when ground or weather forces cattle in, are the moments when a mixer earns its place. A machine that sits idle from April to September and carries the full feeding load through a difficult November is still a machine that pays for itself.
The tendency to look at annual utilisation hours and decide the investment doesn’t stack up misses the cost of what happens without it. Poorly blended shoulder rations, sorting, variable intake, production dips: these don’t show up on the purchase invoice. They show up over the course of the winter in milk solids and body condition scores.
For operations sitting between compact and mid-sized machines and genuinely unsure which capacity handles the full range of groups without over-engineering, matching mixer capacity to actual herd groups is a useful starting point before talking to any supplier.
