Most family farms don’t grow in straight lines. You add a few heifers, lease another camp, push the herd past a threshold where the old machine starts showing its limits. The 2 m³ or 3 m³ mixer that was perfectly adequate two seasons ago now runs double cycles every morning, your mixing time drags out, and the bunk still looks uneven by mid-afternoon. It’s not a glamorous decision. But it’s a real one, and getting it right saves you money over the next five to eight years.

Where Mini Mixers Stop Working

A 2 m³ or 3 m³ machine is designed for herds roughly in the 20 to 40 animal range. Once you’re consistently running two or more loads to cover your full herd, you’ve outgrown the equipment. When you’re splitting a batch across two runs, you’re also splitting variation. The first load may carry more silage than the second. But for the farm that genuinely sits in the 50 to 80 head range and is not planning to double in size within two years, the single-auger at 4 m³ is a sound choice. The mix quality is sufficient for most forage types. The mechanical simplicity means fewer components to service. And the purchase cost is lower, which matters when you’re reinvesting in the herd itself.

The honest trade-off is time per batch. A single auger takes longer to process a tight or stemmy bale than a twin-auger will. If you’re running large round bales of dry teff or Rhodes grass, add a few minutes to your mixing cycle. Plan for it. It’s not a flaw, it’s just how the machine works at this duty level.

Feed waste on a growing family farm is rarely dramatic.
